How to Make the Most of 8 Hours in Paris

There are few things in life more romantic, or honestly, more peaceful, than spending an entire afternoon in Paris just watching the Eiffel Tower do its thing. And yes, I mean that literally.

We had just 8 hours in the city of lights and instead of rushing around trying to squeeze in museums and croissants and cathedrals, we did something delightfully simple: we found a cozy spot in the park and just watched the Eiffel Tower from daylight through dusk until it lit up and sparkled under the stars.

It was magique ((French for magical).

2:00 PM – Arriving in Paris with Nowhere to Be (Except Here)

We landed in Paris on a layover with a half-day to burn and no concrete plans. The weather? Mild, sunny with just enough clouds to make the sky feel like a postcard. We grabbed a quick sandwich at Maison Landemaine (seriously, how do the French make bread taste this good?) and walked straight to Champ de Mars, the grassy park stretching out beneath the Eiffel Tower.

Tip: If you’re coming from CDG or Orly, you can take the RER B to Saint-Michel, transfer to RER C, and get off at Champ de Mars – Tour Eiffel station. Easy.

4:00 PM – Claiming My Spot at Champ de Mars

We found a central spot on the grass with a perfect view of the tower—not too close, not too far. Just enough distance to admire all 1,083 feet of it without craning my neck.

Armed with my camera, a mini box of macarons from Pierre Hermé and some snacks, we settled in. We watched tourists pose with their baguettes, kids chase pigeons, and couples take engagement photos with awkwardly adorable hand-holding.

It was pure people-watching paradise.

6:00 PM – Cloudy Moments, Street Music & The Magic of Doing Nothing

A few clouds rolled in, casting dramatic shadows over the iron latticework. We wandered briefly toward Rue Cler, one of the cutest pedestrian market streets nearby, and picked up some fresh strawberries and a small wedge of cheese from a local vendor. No plans, no rush. Just vibes.

Then, back to our patch of grass.

8:00 PM – Golden Hour Glow

As the sun began to set, the Eiffel Tower took on this gorgeous bronze hue, catching every golden ray and turning into a literal sculpture of light. People started to gather with friends laying out picnic blankets and travelers setting up cameras for the big moment.

We were still parked in the same spot. Six hours in Paris and we hadn’t moved more than a few blocks.

10:00 PM – Sparkle Time

And then—it happened.

At exactly 10pm, as the clock struck the hour, the Eiffel Tower burst into twinkling lights, dancing and shimmering for five whole minutes. It does this every hour on the hour after sunset, but nothing compares to seeing it in person. People gasped, clapped, some even cheered. It was like watching a city breathe, laugh, and shine all at once.

Tip: Set an alarm on your phone so you don’t miss the sparkle! Times vary by season, but generally it starts at dusk and runs until 1am.

Time to Go, But Heart Stayed Behind

We packed up our little Parisian picnic, took one last long look and walked back toward the train station. Our flight out wasn’t for a few more hours, but it felt like I’d just experienced a whole Paris in a single park bench moment.

No museum lines. No rushing. Just Paris, the Eiffel Tower, and us.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need to see all of Paris in a day. Sometimes, you just need to sit still and let Paris come to you.

Even in just one day, Paris left a deep impression. I believe that the way we move through cities, especially famous ones, says a lot about how we see the world. If this resonates, explore my thoughts on traveling with intention and making your trips more meaningful.
